What to Wear for Fall Senior Pictures: Sweaters, Layers, & Color Palettes
Fall in Maryland is easily the most popular time of year for senior portraits—and for good reason! The crisp air, rich golden light, and stunning autumn foliage create the ultimate backdrop to celebrate your final year of high school.
If your senior session is on the calendar for this fall, you’re probably asking the big question every senior (and mom!) wrestles with right before shoot day:
"What in the world should I wear?"
Don’t worry—I’ve got your back! Choosing the right wardrobe doesn't have to be overwhelming. With a few simple styling secrets, you’ll look and feel like your absolute best self in front of the camera.
Here is your complete guide to fall senior portrait styling, from color selection to smart layering!
1. Choose Rich Autumnal Color Palettes
Fall photos pop best when your wardrobe complements—rather than competes with—the natural scenery. You want your face to be the main focus of every image, so aim for warm, timeless tones that highlight your natural features.
Tones That Always Win in Autumn:
Jewel Tones: Deep emerald green, rich burgundy/plum, mustard yellow, and sapphire or navy blue. These look vibrant against golden leaves and flatter almost every skin tone.
Warm Neutrals: Cream, oat, camel, rust, espresso brown, and soft charcoal. Neutrals give your gallery an elevated, high-end feel.
What to Skip:
Neon colors (they cast bright, unnatural color reflections onto your skin).
Super tiny, tight patterns or pinstripes (they can create a strange vibrating effect on camera called moire).
Matching head-to-toe with the background (avoid bright orange or solid bright red so you don't blend straight into the trees!).
2. Master the Art of Layering
Layering is every photographer's favorite secret weapon for senior sessions. Adding layers creates visual depth, rich texture, and—best of all—instant outfit variety without taking up precious time changing in a pop-up tent!

Fall Layering Ideas:
For Her: A fitted cream sweater paired with a dark denim or leather jacket, styled with a cozy fringe scarf or brimmed hat. Simply taking the jacket off gives you a completely different look in 5 seconds!
For Him: A crisp henley or collared shirt under a fitted flannel, suede jacket, or tailored vest paired with dark denim or chinos.
3. Focus on Texture Over Heavy Patterns
When you look at high-end portraits, what makes them feel luxurious isn't loud graphics or big logos—it’s texture. Texture catches the soft autumn sunlight beautifully and adds dimension to your final prints.
Favorite Fall Textures to Mix:
Chunky knits & soft sweaters
Corduroy skirts or pants
Suede and leather boots or jackets
Flannel, denim, and woven fabrics
Pro Tip: Avoid large brand logos, graphic tees, or character prints. We want these photos to look timeless when you look back on them 10, 20, or 30 years from now!
4. Plan for Comfort & Footwear
We will be walking through park trails, tall grass, and scenic outdoor spots to catch that perfect golden-hour light. Shoes can make or break your session comfort!
Boots Are Best: Ankle boots, leather riding boots, or suede booties are fall wardrobe staples that look amazing in full-length shots.
Smart Heels: If you love heels, opt for chunky block heels or boots rather than thin stilettos that sink straight into damp grass or dirt.
Break Them In First: Make sure your shoes are broken in before session day so you aren't fighting blisters mid-shoot!
5. Bring 2 to 3 Distinct Outfits
To get a full, diverse gallery, I recommend bringing 2 to 3 outfits that showcase different sides of your personality:
Casual & Cozy: Your everyday elevated look (e.g., favorite sweater, dark jeans, and boots).
Dressed-Up / Formal: A flowy midi dress with a cardigan, or a tailored jacket and trousers.
Personal / Activity: Showcase what made your high school journey unique! Bring your varsity jacket, sports jersey, dance costume, instrument, or college gear.
