What to Wear for Your Christmas Mini Sessions: The Ultimate Style Guide 🎄✨

There is something undeniably magical about Christmas mini-session season. Between the crisp winter air, the cozy festive setups, and the sheer joy of capturing your family’s latest chapter, it is easily one of my favorite times of the year behind the camera.

If you’ve snagged a spot (or are about to!), you might already be asking the age-old question: “What on earth are we all going to wear?!”

Don't panic! Staring into a closet full of clothes while stressing over color palettes and cold weather is a rite of passage, but it doesn't have to be. As a photographer who has seen every holiday wardrobe combo under the sun, I’ve put together your ultimate styling playbook to keep your photos timeless, cohesive, and completely stress-free.

1. Ditch the "Matchy-Matchy" Rule

Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical red sweaters and khaki pants.

Instead, think coordinated, not matched:

  • Pick a Color Palette: Choose 3 to 4 complementary colors. For holiday sessions, classic combinations include deep forest green, navy, cream, and subtle hints of burgundy or mustard. If you love a neutral, earthy look, mix oatmeal, camel, charcoal, and ivory.

  • Vary Textures: Because your colors won't be identical, texture is your secret weapon. Mixing chunky knit sweaters, corduroy, velvet, denim, and flannel adds rich depth and visual interest to your images without clashing.

2. Dress for the Setting (and the Weather!)

Context is everything! If your session features a vintage holiday camper, a rustic barn, or an evergreen tree farm, your wardrobe should feel right at home in that environment.

  • Lean into rich, organic tones that pop against natural wood, metal, and pine greens.

  • Layer Up: Maryland winters can sneak up on us! Layers are not only stylish (think scarves, blazers, cardigans, and stylish coats), but they are also practical if temperatures drop mid-session. Plus, taking off a jacket gives you two totally different looks in a 10-minute time block!

3. Keep Patterns Subtle and Timeless

When it comes to holiday prints, classic is always king.

  • Do: Opt for subtle plaid, fine stripes, or classic textures like cable knits.

  • Don't: Avoid large, loud logos, graphic tees, or neon brights. They pull the eye away from what matters most—your family’s smiling faces! If one person is wearing a subtle plaid or pattern, keep the rest of the family in solid, complementary tones so the composition stays balanced.

4. Footwear Matters (Yes, Even the Shoes!)

It’s easy to focus entirely on shirts and dresses and forget about what's on your feet, but shoes can make or break an outfit in a full-length frame.

  • Skip the neon running shoes or scuffed sneakers unless they are intentional.

  • Opt for leather boots, clean Chelsea boots, cute booties, loafers, or smart flats.

  • Pro tip for outdoor or farm setups: If it’s been raining, the ground might be a little soft. Bring your nice shoes in a bag and wear comfy walking shoes to the shooting spot—we can swap them out right before your photos!

5. Comfort is Confidence

If your kids are scratching at an itchy collar, or you’re tugging at a dress that’s too tight, it will show in your photos. True joy and authentic connection shine through when everyone feels comfortable and confident in their own skin. Pick pieces that let you hug, tickle, and snuggle your people without restriction!
